Application date

Please note that medical degrees operate a UCAS application deadline of 15 October, three months ahead of some other courses.

Entry requirements

  • GCSE: You are expected to have English Language, Maths and either double Science or Chemistry and Biology – all at Grade B or 6
  • A-levels: AAA in Chemistry or Biology, in addition to one other science course from Biology, Chemistry, Physics or Psychology. Note that General Studies and Critical Thinking will not be accepted. Maths and Further Maths are taken as one subject. Human Biology and Biology equally count as one subject.
  • Cambridge Pre-U: D3, D3, D3 in core academic courses including Chemistry and one of Biology, Psychology or Physics
  • Access to Medicine Programa|: In total, you need distinction with 45 Level 3 Credits at Distinction, or distinction in all graded credits for pre-reformed subjects
  • International Baccalaureate: You are expected to pass Diploma with 36 points in total in addition to  three higher level courses at Grade 6 or above plus Chemistry and one of Biology, Psychology or Physics
  • Scottish Advanced Highers: This can be used alone or in combination with your A-levels. AAA that includes Chemistry and one of Biology, Psychology or Physics.Please note that  Scottish Highers are not tenable.

Selection Process

All candidates are expected to sit for the University Clinical Aptitude Test (UCAT). Candidates  with a Band 4 in the Situational Judgement Test will not be considered. .

You will be assigned a score based on your GCSE grades, confirmed (not predicted) A/AS-levels, actual/predicted degree (where necessary) and your UCAT result as well. Afterwards, your applications are categorically ranked and the highest scoring candidates are invited for interviews.

Fees and funding

UK and EU Students

Note that tuition fees for 2020/21 are not confirmed. As an indication of what you may pay if admitted, the fees for students who were admitted in 2019/20 were:

  • £9,250 for first year. Note that Tuition fees are usually subject to government regulations and may change overtime

International Students

Tuition fees for 2020/21 are yet to be confirmed. As an indication of what you might pay, the fees for students who started in 2019/20 were:

Years 1 and 2

The fee was £20,590 per year for these two years.

Years 3, 4 and 5

These years will cover the cost of clinical training in the National Health Service as such they have a significantly higher cost which rises each year during your course and will be as follows:

  • 2021/22 clinical year fee: £41,945
  • 2022/23 clinical year fee: £43,830
  • 2023/24 clinical year fee: £45,800

Accreditation

Interestingly, the Education Committee of the General Medical Council accredited the Leicester curriculum. To this end, graduation will make you eligible for provisional registration as a doctor.

Careers and employability

When you complete the undergraduate course, you will receive your MBChB degree, which is the main  medical qualification (PMQ). Holding a PMQ automatically entitles you to a provisional registration with the General Medical Council. Provisionally registered doctors are able to practice in approved Foundation Year 1 posts: the law does not allow provisionally registered doctors to take up any other type of work.

In order to obtain a Foundation Year 1 post you will have to apply during the final year of your undergraduate course through the UK Foundation Programme Office selection scheme, which  these posts to graduates on a competitive basis. So far, all suitably qualified UK graduates have found a place on the Foundation Year 1 programme, but this cannot be guaranteed, for instance if there were to be an excessive number of competitive applications from non-UK graduates.
