Founded on the 4th of April, 1460 in Basel; a city known for many internationally acclaimed museums and a rich cultural diversity, the University of Basel is one of the first universities in Switzerland and one of the top ranked institutions both locally and internationally. Admission Requirements

Admission into bachelor’s, master’s, doctoral programs is granted in line with the admission regulations of the rectorate and guidance of the University. Application is done online by paying an application fee of CHF 100 and an additional fee of CHF 150 for late application.

Undergraduate Program

Applicants with Swiss educational qualifications: there are 3 different categories of admissions;

  • Category A: Allows access to all bachelor’s programs.
  • Category B: Allows access to all bachelor’s degree programs with the exception of medicine.
  • Category C: All bachelor’s degree programs at each facility.

Applicants with foreign educational qualification; Secondary School leaving certificate is only recognized if it corresponds to the Swiss Maturitat Certificate and if it’s the highest Secondary school-leaving certificate in the country of origin.

Masters Program

To be admitted into a master’s degree program, a bachelor’s degree with 180 points or its equivalent from a higher education institution acknowledged by the University of Basel and an English language proficiency test to ascertain the command of the language for foreign students that prefer English as language of instruction. Doctoral Studies

Admission for doctoral studies requires a masters degree from a higher education institution acknowledged by the university of Basel. The regulations for doctoral studies of individual faculties include additional requirements for the admission. The Rectorate grants admissions following an acceptance by the concerned faculty.

International Students

The university sends acceptance letters to accepted applicants and are advised to schedule an appointment for visa at the Swedish embassy or consulate in the country of origin, months before departure. Based on the duration of the course applied for, there are two types of student visas;

  • C visa- for short courses of up to 3 months.
  • D visa – for courses longer than 3 months.

Necessary documents for visa application include;

  • 4 passport-size photograph
  • Passport must be valid for 3 months beyond the duration of course.
  • Letter of acceptance by University of Basel.
  • Original and copy of evidence of payment for registration and tuition.
  • Proof of financial means enough to cover the living cost through the duration of the course(not less than 21,000CHF).
  • Letter of institution is required when the student costs will be settled by scholarship or loans.
  • Letter of Motivation.
  • CV
  • Commitment to vacate the country on completing the course* international students are allowed to stay for 6 months after graduation to look for employment.

Language Requirements

The predominant language of teaching at the university of Basel is German and English.The Language of instruction in bachelors degree programs and some master’s program is mainly German.German is also the main examination language for both written and oral exams. bachelors students are required to obtain language skills at level C1 of the common. For masters program taught in English, sufficient proof of English language proficiency is required at the level C1 and B2.

For level C1;

  • Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE).
  • Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English(CPE).
  • Cambridge Business English Certificate Higher(BEC higher).
  • IELTS: minimum score of 7,0.
  • TOEFL paper-based : minimum of 600 points.
  • TOEFL computer-based : minimum of 240 points.
  • TOEFL Internet-based : minimum of 96 points.

For level B2;

  • Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE).
  • Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE).
  • Cambridge Business English Certificate Higher (BEC higher).
  • Cambridge First Certificate in English (FCE).
  • IELTS: minimum score 6.0.
  • TOEFL paper-based: minimum of 550 points.
  • TOEFL computer-based: minimum of 215 points
  • TOEFL internet-based: minimum of 80 points.

Admission Periods

Applications for bachelor’s programs, master’s programs and doctoral programs must be submitted before the specified deadline.

For bachelor program

Fall semester 2017:deadline for application is 30th of April, 2017 and for late application is 31st of July, 2017.

Spring Semester 2018:deadline is 30th of November, 2017.

For master’s program

Fall semester 2017:deadline for application is 30th of April, 2017 and for late application is 31st of July, 2017.

Spring semester 2018:deadline is 30th of November, 2017.

For doctoral studies

Fall semester 2017:deadline for application is 31st of July, 2017.

Spring semester 2018:deadline for applications is 5th of January, 2018.
